Significant Projects
Young Children and Primary Schools
The Emerald Cave: a series of magical, multi sensory installations designed for babies, young children and their parents to engage in creative play alongside fantastical characters.
International Storytelling Projects: artists from across the world have worked with us to create new storytelling dramas for infant children, bringing their distinctive artistic practice to the company. Dreamtime was directed by Wesley Enoch, an aboriginal theatre director, More Tales to Tell with Amina Blackwood Meekes, a storyteller from Antigua, The Magic Bowl featuring Indian dancer Lakshmi Bai Gurudatt and Toontoony Tales, with Kathak dancer Ahsan Nadeem on his first visit to Britain.
Dance Alive!: a year long dance in education project for 4 – 11 year olds which toured across the Midlands with a groundbreaking programme of interactive dance.
‘Landmarks’: a 2 year project which created six T.I.E. projects in significant Birmingham buildings - Sarehole Mill, Balsall Heath Baths, The IKON Gallery and the Museum and Art Gallery.
The Newman Experiment - Saving Hope - The Green Children: a trilogy of Language Alive! programmes that explored themes of citizenship with 10 and 11 year olds with stories inspired by Mary Shelley, the people of plague struck Eyam and the mysterious tale of the green children.
Stargazing: a solo programme that entwined the fate of Galileo with a class of time travelling children who had to grasp his theory of the universe to challenge the inquisition.
Secondary Children
Changes: a sex education programme that marked a change from the kitchen sink - using physical theatre and symbol to explore relationships with 13 and 14 year olds.
Suenos de Amor: a bi-lingual English and Spanish production that toured to Madrid and Birmingham schools, exploring relationships and holiday romances, supported by the E.U. HIV and Aids programme.
Company recognition
The company were shortlisted for Smith Kline Beecham Excellence for Community Health 2000
Awarded Investor in People status in 1999 and re-assessed in 2002: The assessor wrote “the great strength of The Play House is its leadership – they have clear vision and implement it through strong values” and “the company has demonstrated an excellent level of achievement in its teamwork”
