Secret Poetry Slam

Literacy, Performance Poetry.

Age Group: 7-11

Addresses the following areas of learning in the KS2 Curriculum:

  • Preparing poems to read aloud and to perform.

  • Experimenting with intonation, tone and volume so that the meaning of a poem is clear to an audience.

  • Speaking and listening.

Set in a dystopian future where the government has banned all forms of artistic expression, Secret Poetry Slam puts the children in role as investigators going undercover to find out about the work of a banned poet.

After taking part in one of his workshops and creating their own poetry the children have to decide whether to keep his identity a secret or not.

Children will:

  • Create and present their own original poems using a variety of techniques.

  • Explore how language, structure and rhythm can enhance the meaning of poetry.

  • Debate poetry’s importance as a form of expression.

Access a comprehensive resource pack with follow-up activities which allow you to expand on learning from the workshop after our visit.
